Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre

By ELEANOR MCGILLIE 26 September, 2015

This time last year Eleanor McGillie was preparing to go to the first ever Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre. It’s back for a second year and has featured on the Great British Menu this year. Can Northern Ireland tourism events get any more fun?

It’s true – Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre is back for a second year with a celebration of County Armagh’s home grown produce. Combine this with a celebration of the centenary of one of the most powerful organizations in the UK – the Women’s Institute – it’s going to be a corker of a year.

The fayre is going to be pretty special this year as it place on Halloween Day and will no doubt build on the success of the popular village fayre. With the year of food tourism coming up in Northern Ireland in 2016 this is a perfect example of how a local village fayre can empowers people to connect with the land through artisan food and drink producers.

If you are like me, and be hooked to cookery programmes, you will have watched this year’s Great British Menu which featured last year’s Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre.

In 2014, over 2,000 people gathered in the village square to sample local beef, breads, ciders, juices, potatoes, apples as well as enjoying lots of family entertainment.

With three major themes this year – Food and Drink, Halloween and the Centenary of the WI – this year’s display will be one not to be missed.

What was notable last year is the interest in the event across Northern Ireland and further afield is phenomenal. This fayre celebrates the end of the harvest and the vital role our food and drink producers play. It’s such a perfect event to celebrate food and drink tourism.

Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre brings people together including families, foodies, chefs, storytellers, musicians, bloggers, travel writers, WI representatives and schools who all want to celebrate the natural beauty of our orchard county.

As described last year by Dr Howard Hastings OBE, it’s the fayre which is an authentic celebration of Armagh’s distinctive local food and drink and celebrates the Armagh Bramley which achieved PGI status in 2012.

We all know Armagh is known as the Orchard County so go along this year to the 2015 Richhill Apple Harvest Fayre and be part of the celebration of apples. It is pretty cool, the food smells awesome, the tarts are delicious and the tug o’war men will set the hearts racing.
