Northern Ireland’s North Coast boasts one of the most consistent coastlines in the UK for surfing where the wild Atlantic Ocean races on shore and here to help you enjoy your surfing experience is Alive Surf School in Portrush.
Based at West Strand and other Causeway Coast beaches, you’ll see the Alive Surf School van when you arrive for your individual or group lesson, your Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board experience or to rent boards or wetsuits if you want to go it alone.

With Hanno Windisch leading the team of instructors you will have a great experience from this surf school which remains at the top of TripAdvisor in Ireland.
Alive Surf School has won numerous awards including best family activity provider for three years in a row and it holds its certificate of excellence since 2012.
Hanno, Nick, Catherine and Hannah are experienced instructors so they’re on hand to teach groups of people and individuals by offering quality advice, showing them best practice techniques and making sure everyone has a good laugh between hopping on and falling off the boards.
Surfing lessons are extremely popular for school excursions, corporate team building, hen and stag parties, community and church groups and groups of friends who want to enjoy the ocean, build confidence and challenge themselves. But the skills of the team allows visitors a totally new experience.
This award winning surf school also offers visitors the opportunity to experience our hidden caves and coves around the coastline when you opt for some Stand Up Paddle. You will never truly experience our coastline until you have done a SUP tour with Hanno. There’s something magical about manoeuvering in and out of caves and coves on a Stand Up Paddle board. The sound of the ocean beating off the rocks, the noise of the seabirds, the silence and echoes in the caves. It’s fun and magical all at the same time and if you like a good core workout, then SUP is certainly one way to get the core muscles working.
In case you’re wondering – you don’t have to be a pro because our waves suit everyone and, where the instructors do their SUP tours, the water is pretty flat so it’s the best of both worlds.
Paddleboarding is the fastest growing sport in Northern Ireland so for those of you who are not so confident in the water, these guys will look after you in the best way possible.
Hanno and the team of instructors believe surfing should be available for everyone and so they work hard to make Alive Surf School the most inclusive surf school in the world by welcoming people of all ages, shapes, sizes, languages and disabilities. Alive’s motto is simple – ‘be safe and have fun’.
