Feabhail’s Flurry – A SUP experience not to be missed

By ELEANOR MCGILLIE 14 August, 2017

ECO tourism is becoming increasingly popular in Northern Ireland with people wanting to explore the natural environment which deepens our connection with our surroundings. Lauren Sharkey speaks to Lorcan McBride about a new paddle board experience in Lough Foyle – Feabhail’s Flurry.

Stand up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is becoming a popular way to explore our rivers, loughs and our cities thanks to people like Lorcan McBride from Far and Wild.

From small beginnings, as a group of outdoor instructors seeking to re-invent the envelope of outdoor learning, Far and Wild discover and implement best practice, looks at indigenous values and draws on active learning as ecologists.

The team are committed to bringing visitors on an insightful journey as tours are tailored to their wishes which helps celebrate the shores of Lough Foyle. Lorcan and his team work towards achieving sustainable adventures and promoting eco-tourism in the North West of Ireland.

On September 23, up to 100 people will take part in the ultimate Stand Up Paddle Board challenge known as Feabhail’s Flurry.

The challenge starts in Derry-Londonderry on the River Foyle. It will start at high tide so paddle boarders will enjoy up to 20 miles of tranquility along the shores of the Lough from Derry to Greencastle using the outgoing tide. The final destination is where the Lough enters the sea at Magilligan Point.

The experience will be marshaled by a group of experienced outdoor instructors to help both beginners and experienced paddle boarders reach the port and harbour of Greencastle.

The challenge of paddleboarding 20 miles may be daunting to beginners. But, there’s no pressure as you decide how far you go, and, if you choose not to complete 20 miles, a bus will be available to collect people along the way.

The experience seeks to highlight the cultural heritage of the Lough. Anyone taking part in this SUP challenge will absolutely love this natural haven.

Far and Wild want to showcase the Lough in all its beauty to demonstrate how this wonderful environment can educate, inspire and bring people closer to nature.
