Guided walking tour company to create four new tours for ‘Lore of the Land’


GUIDED walking tour company, Nine Glens Walking Tours, is to create four new tours of the Causeway Coast and Glens having secured a contract entitled ‘Lore of the Land’ which seeks to tell the story of the people behind our culture, heritage and history.

Caoimhin Mac Gabhann, founder of Nine Glens Walking Tours, brings together stories of mythology, history, heritage and culture and delivers those stories to groups of people who want a guided tour with a difference.

The Lore of the Land project, which is a cross community project supported by the EU’s Peace IV Programme, will be delivered in partnership with the Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Service.

The project will entail the development and delivery of four tours spanning the length and breadth of the Causeway Coast and Glens.

The tours will take in Bonamargy Friary, Dunluce Castle, Dungiven Priory and Slaghtavery allowing Nine Glens Walking Tours to tell the stories linked to these magnificent historic sites.

Speaking about the project, Kevin said: “Nine Glens Walking Tours was set up in 2016 to uncover and tell some of the political history of the Glens of Antrim. We soon realised that tourists and locals wanted to hear about more than just the political history of the area. They wanted to hear about the local people behind these stories, the societies that produced them, and, more importantly where we go from there.

“Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas in the world today and that is exactly what we are aiming to do at Nine Glens Walking Tours.

“Lore of the Land aims to increase understanding and expression of our culture and history, our people and places through museum collections, historic sites and cultural heritage using interpretation, arts and multimedia to create a peace building legacy.

“It is a cross-community programme which aims to engage with older residents of the Causeway Coast and Glens area. The project will seek to stimulate reminiscence and discussion of local folk lore. It will also include participants’ personal stories in order to explore and share the cultural heritage of Causeway communities.”

Caoimhin added: “It is good to see our partnership with Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Service go from strength to strength. It’s great to be putting the training they provided me with to good use (OCN Level 2 Accreditation in Tour Guiding). We probably would not be in this position to provide our services had it not been for the Museum Service. Storytelling is something that we hold dear and is quite often a forgotten part of our Irish identity and hopefully through the completion of this project we will once again have brought this to the forefront.”
