Mournes beat UK hotspots in ‘Best View’ poll

By ELEANOR MCGILLIE 23 February, 2016

In December Live It Experience It urged people across Northern Ireland to vote for the Mourne Mountains range which had been shortlisted for The Countryman magazine’s ‘Best View’.  Our tourism cluster is delighted that the jagged mountain range has been officially ranked Number One in the magazine’s poll. Eleanor McGillie reports.

Around one third of people surveyed by The Countryman magazine voted for the mountains of Mourne in County Down, Northern Ireland, where parts of the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones were filmed.

The granite mountain range also inspired author C S Lewis as he wrote his children’s book series The Chronicles of Narnia.

Competing against other famous swells of countryside ranging from the Scottish Highlands, the Welsh mountains and valleys and stunning beaches, the Mournes range was the only Northern Ireland location shortlisted.

The top five views as voted in The Countryman magazine’s survey are:

– Mountains of Mourne from the shoreline near Tyrella, County Down

– Snowdonia from the summit of Snowdon

– Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye

– Wastwater, Lake District

– Marloes, St Brides Bay, Pembrokeshire

The director of Live It Experience It, said no matter if you have climbed our highest peak at Slieve Donard at 853m, or Meelmore at 704m, the views from the Mournes are stunning.

She said: “It’s great news that the Mournes have been ranked as the Best View. The jagged mountain range is so popular with hikers, walkers, climbers, mountain bikers, bird watchers and many more people who all enjoy our famous peaks.

“To have such a stunning location on our own doorstep is fantastic but to be able to market the Mournes as the Best View is fantastic. We hope tourism businesses working in Co Down will certainly reap the benefits of the accolade.”

The views from the summit of Donard are breathtaking. On a clear day, hikers can see the Isle of Man, Wicklow, Donegal, Wales and Scotland and of course the beautiful stretch of Newcastle Beach. With stone walls, wildlife and of course the elements, the views from the top make the climb so worthwhile. #liveitexperienceit
