By JOHN CADDOO 22 March, 2018

Summer 2019 will see the world’s elite golfers arrive in Northern Ireland for 148th Open Championship. John Caddoo looks ahead to the event which will place Northern Ireland at the centre of the global sporting spotlight

Tourism businesses across Northern Ireland  will be making preparations for The Open Championship which will take place from July 18-21 at one of our most prestigious venues.

Royal Portrush, which has been described as the seventh greatest golf course in the world, will be the perfect location to showcase our iconic coastline.

Visitors coming to our shores will be surrounded by the famous ruins of the 13th Century Dunluce Castle , our stunning beaches, dramatic landscapes and of course  visitors will be lapping up our world class hospitality.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for our accommodation providers, activity providers and our pubs and restaurants.

Eleanor McGillie, brand editor of Live It Experience It, said: “The Open Championship is an event which will bring huge potential for tourism businesses right across Northern Ireland. Our members are tourism businesses working hard to ensure visitors have a wonderful experience while they are here. Not only that but our members’ offerings will give visitors a great story to share when they leave.

“There are so many wonderful places to stay, places to explore and so many flavours of Northern Ireland to taste.

“Live It Experience It will be working with our members to tell the story of what they have to offer our visitors while they are here. This could range from walking tours, supper clubs, stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking or having a quiet pint in a country pub and much more. The opportunities for businesses are endless.”

Northern Ireland is currently attracting visitors from far afield, including China and the US, and tourism officials are reportedly pushing well-established attractions such as the Giant’s Causeway, Titanic Belfast and Game Of Thrones filming locations, along with The Open Championship, which is coming to Royal Portrush in 2019.

With so many iconic sites and beaches to explore Live It Experience It members can market their offerings to attract golf enthusiasts visiting for the Open.

Hanno Windisch, of Alive Surf School, said: “Events such as the Open presents fantastic opportunities for tourism businesses. Activity providers, accommodation providers and food and drink establishments can certainly benefit from the influx of visitors.

“Alive Surf School instructors are certainly embracing the opportunity. We hope to show golfing enthusiasts a great time by exploring our coast on paddleboards and indeed enjoying our waves. There’s so much to do on the North Coast so we will be working with other tourism providers to come up with packages which will be fun, adventurous and good craic.”
